Takae
Terribly sweet and kind. So shy, polite and discreet. Takae, my friend Taka.
When I met her, in the summer of 2004, we had to share the same flat. Our purpose was similar: being in England in order to improve our English, no matter what.
At that time my English knowledge wasn’t bad as I had already spent 4 months in Canterbury. Hers, just arrived, was the most extraordinary in the world. It was funny and bizarre and original.
I didn’t understand a word at the beginning, and our communication was hard. But we had a big fun together and spent time laughing and gesticulating.
She had a big smile stuck on her face and a delicious attitude towards everyone.
She used to say: “Sorry” for her grammatical mistakes, but it was actually her pronunciation quite impossible to make out.
It sounded like a melody, a mix of unusual notes, pauses and refrains. It was just great.
We became friends pretty soon. We created such a good feeling that we could understand each other with a look.
We lived in the same house for 3 months and every day went to the same school, had the same dinner, watch the same movies, shared the same toilet…
I left Canterbury and her in September.
Our farewell was touching. I will never forget her tears, her sad eyes, her sweet words.
She was standing at the bus stop, alone, waiting for the bus to move. She coudn’t help but cry and cry. She didn’t go away untill I left.
Her expression was intense and deep, so was she.
Three months after my departure she took a plane and reached me in America, for Christmas.
Few months later she came to visit me in Rome and was my guest.
She became a good friend of my boyfriend as well and my family felt in love with her.
Nowadays we email and phone each other from time to time, but it’s not enough.
I miss her smile, her crazy English and her japanese habits: to say always yes, to be tidy and mild, to make you feel at ease.
